“Where are LONGi solar panels made?” is the first question most new buyers ask me. I usually answer it with another question: what are you going to do with the panels? Solar panel sourcing is not one purchasing decision. It’s three different decisions, depending on whether you are distributing, branding, or simply exploring.

Straight answer: LONGi is a China-headquartered solar manufacturer, founded in 2000 and based in Xi’an. Unlike module assemblers that buy cells from third parties, LONGi is vertically integrated from monocrystalline ingots and wafers through cells to finished modules. The Hi-MO panels in our catalog are assembled mainly at LONGi’s own plants in mainland China—large module bases include Xi’an and Jiaxing—with overseas manufacturing capacity in Malaysia.
The location can vary by model, market, and contract. If your customs broker, lender, or project spec requires a specific country of origin, do not rely on the brand name alone. Ask your sales contact for the plant name and the certificate that lists that plant. In the current trade environment—US AD/CVD cases, EU reporting rules, and similar—this matters for duty calculation and compliance as much as for delivery time.
Here’s the nuance I try to communicate in every sourcing conversation: manufacturing location is a customs answer, not a quality answer. The nameplate is the quality answer.
Scenario 1: You Distribute LONGi Panels With the LONGi Nameplate
If you buy LONGi solar panels and resell them with the LONGi brand visible, you are mainly buying chain integrity. The product’s quality system, test certificates, and warranty are managed by LONGi. Your job is to keep that chain intact from our factory to the installer’s roof.
My team checks three things in this route:
- Authorized channel status. The LONGi warranty has conditions around how modules move through distribution. Confirm your purchase is via an authorized wholesale supply agreement, not through a broker who bought from an unknown point in the chain.
- Label and lot consistency. Match the module label with the packing list, pallet label, and commercial invoice. A mismatch in model number, power class, or serial prefix is a leading cause of customs holds.
- Damage at the right moment. Many transit claims fail because the receiver signed the delivery receipt before opening the packaging. Solar panels can arrive with broken frames or cracked glass even when the container seal looks fine.
On that last point, a real example: in 2024, a distribution partner skipped a discharge inspection to save about $850. The container arrived, the seal was intact, and the driver got a clean signature. When crews unboxed the pallets three days later, 14 frames were bent and two backsheets were cracked. Private label usually means you take an existing platform—for example, a Hi-MO series—and the module is produced to that platform’s specification with your logo and packaging. The product design, bill of materials, testing, and performance data remain defined by the manufacturer.
True OEM (or ODM) means you define part of the specification: cell layout, glass, frame, junction box, connectors, packaging, or model designation. The manufacturer builds and certifies that custom configuration for you. This route normally requires larger volumes and longer engineering lead times.
The counter-intuitive part is that private label is not a lighter compliance burden than buying the brand. In fact, it’s heavier. When your company name is printed on the nameplate, you become the responsible party in the eyes of the installer and the end customer. If a private-label module fails in year 7, the call does not go to LONGi’s service desk. It goes to you.
Here is the mistake I see most in OEM negotiations. A buyer says “we want the same module as the catalog, just with our brand.” The supplier says “yes, a standard private-label conversion.” Both sides believe they have said the same thing. In one case from a few years ago, the buyer’s phrase “certificates in our name” meant their legal entity should be the certificate holder for customs and financing. The supplier heard “we need a copy of the test reports.” The gap was discovered three days before the first shipment, when the buyer’s bank asked who the certificate holder was. Since then, I require every OEM/private-label agreement to answer four questions in writing:
- Who is listed as the certificate holder on the IEC 61215 / IEC 61730 or UL 61730 certificates for each model?
- Who responds to field warranty claims? If it’s you, what warranty reserve and replacement-stock terms are built into the contract?
- What is the binding acceptance criteria? The datasheet is a marketing document. The quality agreement—with power tolerance, visual acceptance limits, and AQL sampling—is the document that matters. If you only have a datasheet, ask for a spec.
- What triggers a change notification? For a private-label product, a change in cell or glass supplier is almost indistinguishable from a brand change to your customer. You need a written requirement to approve BOM changes before they ship.
One more thing that surprises private-label partners: if your marketing says “recyclable,” that claim has legal weight. In the United States, the FTC Green Guides require environmental claims to be substantiated and qualified. For example, a product can generally be called recyclable only where recycling programs for it are available to at least 60% of consumers. That burden lands on the brand owner, not the contract manufacturer. It’s another reason to review the datasheet text you inherit, not just the logo.
Scenario 3: You’re at the Catalog Stage
Not every reader is a distributor or a brand owner. Many are at the beginning of solar panel sourcing: they have just opened a photovoltaic module catalog, sorted by wattage, and are trying to compare a 430 W panel with a 545 W panel as if they were the same kind of product.
The catalog is a useful starting point, but it is not a specification. It tells you the product family and range—not which model revisions are current, which certificates exist, what the packaging looks like, which factory will produce your lot, or what the minimum order quantity is. Before asking for pricing, do three things:
- Request the current datasheet and certificate list for a specific model number, not just the catalog summary.
- Compare delivered price per watt, not module price. A lower module price can disappear under higher freight, duties, payment terms, or a longer lead time.
- Ask for packing and container details—modules per pallet, pallet weight, and loading plan. Logistics cost changes with those numbers.
And if you are comparing quotes, make sure they are for the same model series. A “LONGi panel” can be a 54-cell residential module or a 72-cell commercial module from different Hi-MO families. Ask for the full model code. Two quotes for two different products are not comparable.
How to Tell Which Sourcing Profile You’re In
If you are not sure, look at the nameplate—or more accurately, picture the nameplate as it would appear on a module installed on a roof. Whose name is on it?
- LONGi’s name → Profile 1. Your job is preserving the chain: buy from an authorized channel and focus on logistics and handling.
- Your brand or your customer’s brand → Profile 2. You are taking on certification, warranty, and acceptance responsibilities. Structure the agreement accordingly.
- You don’t know yet → Profile 3. Stop comparing dozens of models. Pick one reference module and study its datasheet and certificate list first.
I recommend telling your supplier which profile you are in from the first email. A request that says “we are evaluating a private-label program” triggers a completely different set of documents than “we need an authorized wholesale line.” Saying it early is not a formality; it is a filter.
After years of reviewing modules—including one memorable field audit in Q1 2024 where the root cause of a performance complaint was a wrong module label, not the solar cell itself—my conclusion is simple. Solar module sourcing is less like buying a commodity and more like assigning liability for 25 years. A solar panel is a long-term obligation wrapped in glass and aluminum.
So yes, check where LONGi solar panels are made. Verify that the factory on the shipping documents matches the certificate. Then spend the rest of your effort on the nameplate and the paperwork. The country of origin determines your customs bill. The nameplate determines who answers when a roof calls eight years later. That is the difference between a good sourcing decision and a cheap order.
