How to Evaluate PV Module Manufacturers Before Buying LONGi Solar Panels (590W)

There’s a question I get a lot, and it usually starts like this:

“Should we order LONGi solar panels for our wholesale business?”

It’s a fair question. It’s also one I can’t answer with a clean yes or no, because three completely different kinds of buyers are asking it:
One buyer wants to fill a single container and test a new market. Another runs an existing distribution business and needs to compare module makers before adding a product line. A third doesn’t want the LONGi name on the front of the module at all.

What’s right for one of those three can be expensive for another. I know, because I’ve been the expensive example.

What My Mistakes Taught Me About Evaluating Manufacturers

I’ve handled PV module procurement for distributors since 2017. In that time I’ve personally made—and documented—eleven sourcing mistakes, totaling roughly $400,000 in wasted budget. Maybe $350,000. I stopped counting precisely after the demurrage fight.

Two lessons shaped the checklist I keep today.

Lesson one: “Tier 1” is not a safety certification. In 2019, I believed a quote that said “Tier 1 manufacturer” and stopped asking for test certificates. It turns out “Tier 1” is a bankability term, popularized by BloombergNEF. That doesn’t mean the term is fake, but it’s not a certificate of quality for the specific model on the quote. The specific model still needs to be evaluated on its own documents, at its own manufacturing site. I learned this when a project financier asked to see the module’s test reports and certificate file, and I had to admit I hadn’t requested them.

Lesson two: you need a formal model-versus-certificate check. We didn’t have one for rush orders. In September 2022, we processed a large order for modules described as “LONGi 590W.” The commercial invoice repeated it. When the shipment arrived, the nameplate model didn’t match the certificate file we had relied on for the installation permit. We were lucky—the factory quality team caught it before any modules went on a roof—but the re-inspection, container storage, and schedule delay still cost us about $6,800 and a very uncomfortable client call.

Since the third time that kind of process gap happened, I created a formal pre-order checklist. It has caught 47 potential errors in the past 18 months. Not all were disasters waiting to happen, but every single one would have cost time or money. This article is basically that checklist, reorganized for the way different buyers actually work.

Three Buyer Profiles, One Question

If your search phrase looks like “buy LONGi solar panels 590W”, the first thing to understand is that 590 W is a product class, not one SKU. Which module in that class makes sense depends on your buying situation.

  • Buyer A: you’re placing your first direct wholesale order, probably a container or two. Your risk is verifying that you’re getting an authentic, properly certified, warranty-backed product.
  • Buyer B: you already distribute solar equipment and you’re evaluating LONGi as a new supplier—or comparing other manufacturers against them. Your risk is comparing modules in a way that won’t hold up over the next ten years.
  • Buyer C: you buy for OEM / private-label use. The module will carry your brand, not LONGi’s. Your risk is in the label, the certificate, and the warranty chain—not in the module’s marketing name.

If you’re not sure which buyer you are yet, don’t skip ahead. Read the quick self-test at the end. The cheapest mistake I ever made was following good advice for the wrong situation.

Buyer A: First Wholesale Order of LONGi Solar Panels

For Buyer A, I’d normally say start with a small order, but even that small order needs the right paperwork. Here’s the minimum list I now refuse to skip:

  • Get the full model code, not a nickname. “LONGi 590W” is not a model. The official LONGi solar panel catalog shows several models in the 590 W class, and the difference between them matters for dimensions, weight, current, and certificates. Ask for the complete model code and write it into the purchase order.
  • Ask for the certificate list. In most markets, that means IEC 61215 and IEC 61730. In North America, check the model number appears on the current UL certificate. A module can be made by a reputable manufacturer and still be a model that hasn’t been listed yet.
  • Check the model on the certificate matches the model on the nameplate. This sounds too basic to be a real failure, but I showed you above exactly what happens when you skip it.
  • See a label photograph before you sign. A simple photo of the actual nameplate tells you more than a spec sheet ever will. Ask for a clear image and check it against the datasheet.
  • Verify the channel. LONGi modules carry a manufacturer’s warranty, but parallel-import or grey-market modules can create warranty headaches. Ask the supplier to confirm they’re an authorized channel in writing, and check the module serial number range with the manufacturer before payment if you can.

Here’s the counter-intuitive part: don’t start by negotiating the lowest price. Start by proving the product and the channel. If the quote is cheaper because the modules were diverted from another market or the warranty won’t follow the panels, you haven’t saved money—you’ve bought risk. On the next order, after you’ve confirmed the product and the process, push hard on price. By then, you’ll have earned the right to negotiate.

Buyer B: Wholesale Distributors Comparing PV Module Manufacturers

Buyer B usually asks a more interesting question: not “is LONGi legit?” but “how to evaluate PV module manufacturers without getting fooled by marketing.” This is where I see buyers fall into an outdated habit.

Don’t Compare Modules the Way You Did in 2020

What was best practice in 2020 isn’t sufficient in 2025. Five years ago, comparing a PV module purchase meant comparing nameplate wattage, efficiency, and price per watt. That worked because the industry was on a relatively stable p-type technology base.

The technology base has shifted. Between then and now, the industry moved to n-type cells and TOPCon structures as the standard for high-power modules. LONGi also invested in its own HPBC cell technology for distributed-generation products. That’s not a criticism of older modules—many still perform well—but if you evaluate a 2025 purchase using a 2020 checklist, you’ll miss the important questions:

  • Is this module from a current product generation, or is it the tail-end of a discontinued line?
  • Does the quote’s model actually appear in the latest solar panel catalog from the manufacturer?
  • Does the supplier have a clear roadmap for what replaces this module in the next 18 months?
  • Are the datasheets, test certificates, and warranty documents aligned with the model you’re buying?

The fundamentals haven’t gone away—warranty, certification, and bankability still matter. But the execution of those fundamentals has changed. A manufacturer’s technology roadmap is now just as important as its price list.

Four Documents a Serious Solar Panel Supplier Can Provide

I won’t name a complete evaluation framework here—that would need a much longer post—but these are the documents we request when checking a new manufacturer:

  1. The current datasheet PDF with a revision number and date, not a screenshot from a sales email.
  2. The relevant certificate files (IEC or UL) showing the full model code and the manufacturing site.
  3. The warranty statement from the legal entity that actually stands behind the product.
  4. A third-party test report or PVEL-style reliability scorecard for the model family, if one exists.

If a solar panel supplier can’t provide all four without a three-week delay, that’s a signal. The module might be fine, but your relationship with that supplier will be painful whenever something goes wrong.

One more note for Buyer B: ignore wattage in the sales pitch. A 590 W module from one manufacturer is not automatically comparable to a 590 W module from another. Compare the things that affect real-world performance over 25 years: temperature coefficient, degradation rate, bifaciality factor if applicable, warranty terms, and the tolerance range you’re actually guaranteed. Those numbers are less exciting than peak power, but they’re the numbers that show up on your customers’ energy bills.

Buyer C: OEM / Private-Label Buyers

Buyer C has a different starting point: they want the module to carry their own name. That changes almost everything about the purchase process, even when the product underneath is the same.

LONGi operates an established OEM/private-label channel. That’s not a secret, but it’s not as visible as its branded product line either. If you’re buying this way, the branded-product checks still apply, plus a few more:

  • What exact model code goes on your nameplate? Private-label products often use a model code that differs from the factory’s standard branded model. Make sure that model code, your brand name, and the certificate file all match.
  • Who handles the label approval? This sounds minor until a container arrives with the wrong logo position, incorrect electrical ratings, or a model code that doesn’t match the certificate. We now require a digital label proof plus a physical photo before shipment.
  • How are warranty claims traced back? When your brand is on the module, the end customer will call you first. Ask the manufacturer how serial numbers link to your brand, and write down the claim process before you need it.
  • What are the marketing constraints? If your packaging makes environmental claims, be careful. Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), environmental claims must be truthful, substantiated, and not misleading. Broad terms like “eco-friendly” need support. That applies to solar modules too, even in B2B packaging.

I remember approving our first private-label order and immediately second-guessing the decision. What if the label artwork was slightly off and nobody noticed until after customs? I didn’t relax until the factory sent the physical label photo and the serial number list. That worry wasn’t paranoia. It was the right instinct—just a little late, and it’s why the label-approval process is now on the checklist.

Quick Self-Test: Which Buyer Are You?

If you’re not sure which profile above fits, answer these four questions:

  1. Whose brand will be on the nameplate? If it says LONGi, you’re Buyer A or B. If it says your brand, you’re Buyer C.
  2. How many MW did you purchase in the last 12 months? Less than one container equivalent and you’re likely Buyer A. More than a few containers, and you’re Buyer B.
  3. Who will handle the warranty claim? If your customer goes to the module brand, you’re A or B. If every claim lands on your desk, you’re C.
  4. When was your last module specification review? If your existing supplier list was built before 2022, run it through Buyer B checks before adding a new line.

If you still can’t decide, start with Buyer A’s checklist. It’s the foundation for every other buying decision, and it’s the fastest way to learn whether a supplier deserves a bigger order.

And when you’re ready to talk specifics, ask for the latest official solar panel catalog, compare the datasheet revision dates, and verify the full model code on the certificate. That’s where every good module purchase actually begins.
