If you buy LONGi solar panels for a distribution or wholesale business, people will ask you one question: OEM or private label? It's the wrong question. The label on the module matters less than the verification process behind it. That's the conclusion I've reached after four years of inspecting roughly 200 module shipments annually—and after rejecting 11% of first deliveries in 2024 for spec deviations, more than half of which came from suppliers we'd classified as "premium."
Let me be transparent about my perspective. I'm the quality and brand compliance manager at a solar distribution company. I review every incoming batch before it reaches our channel partners—around 200 shipments a year, from 10,000 to 50,000 modules per order. If you're buying for a single utility site or a rooftop project, your experience will differ. This is for B2B buyers who move volume and need repeatable results.
OEM and private label sound like different species of purchasing. They're not. Whether you buy photovoltaic modules from LONGi under their own brand, under a private label, or through an OEM arrangement, the cells, the lamination, and the electrical data come from the same production environment. The difference is whose name goes on the front, and who owns the documentation (i.e., who answers when something goes wrong).
The Specification Sheet Is the Real Contract
In my first year, I made the classic rookie error: assumed "Tier 1 manufacturer" meant identical results across vendors. It doesn't. Same factory, different tolerances. Same datasheet claims, different actual output distributions. We relied on IEC certificates and skipped independent testing on a batch of 8,000 modules. Cost us a $22,000 redo when the delivered modules didn't meet the performance spec on their own datasheet.
Now every contract I touch includes three non-negotiables: exact model-level IEC 61215 / 61730 certificates (not "equivalent family" certificates), batch-level EL testing, and serial traceability back to the production line and test date.
That last one—traceability—is the one most buyers forget. It's invisible until you file a warranty claim. If you can't tell which production line a module came from, or when it was tested, your warranty processors will drag their feet. I've seen claims that took eight months instead of two simply because the paperwork wasn't there. Time is also a cost.
OEM vs Private Label: What Actually Changes
For PV module OEM deals, you typically specify your brand, maybe custom packaging, and sometimes a different power bin mix. For private label, you're rebadging existing configurations—like LONGi Hi-MO bifacial models—under your own brand. The modules are essentially the same. But the commercial responsibilities shift:
- Warranty administration. If it's private label, who issues the 25-year performance warranty—you or LONGi? If it's you, you need the technical capacity to handle claims. That's a real cost, not a checkbox.
- Inspection liability. When modules arrive on pallets, who has the right (and the competence) to open and inspect them before title transfers? The answer determines who eats the cost of microcracks from rough handling.
- Brand risk. If a builder installs "your" modules and they underperform, does your brand survive? The photovoltaic module OEM doesn't absorb that. You do.
The surprise, for me, was that private label often involves more internal cost than OEM—not less. You're not buying cheaper; you're buying the right to own the customer relationship. That's fine if you want it. Just price it into your model.
How to Compare Quotes: Total Cost of Ownership, Not Sticker Price
Pricing reference, quickly: as of Q1 2025, public indices from PV InfoLink and similar trackers show meaningful spreads between brand tiers and between "spot" and contracted volumes. But published averages are market orientation, not a procurement target. The market shifts quarterly—or faster. I've seen two bids on the same LONGi module variant differ by more than the entire quarterly price index movement. Both were from legitimate suppliers.
So how do you decide between a $0.105/W quote and a $0.118/W quote? Calculate the all-in cost per watt delivered, not the per-module price:
- Add freight and insurance per watt.
- Add inspection costs per shipment (EL test samples, visual checks, power verification).
- Estimate claims handling time as a cost. What does an eight-month warranty dispute cost you in working capital?
- Add the expected cost of rejects. If you reject 2% of a batch, the accepted modules just became 2% more expensive.
That last one is where I see people get it wrong. A cheaper supplier with a 4% rejection rate is more expensive than a dearer supplier with a 0.5% rejection rate, once you account for logistics and lost time. Simple math. Few people do it.
What I Verify on Every LONGi Hi-MO Purchase
The specific checks matter more than the debate over OEM vs private label. For a wholesale buyer, I'd put these at the top of the list:
- Model-level certifications. The certificate must reference the exact product type on your contract. Not "Hi-MO 7 series" generally, but the specific SKU.
- Power tolerance. LONGi Hi-MO specifies 0 to +5W. If the supplier quotes modules that only meet -0W to +3W, know what that means for your system pricing.
- Bifacial gain assumptions. Hi-MO bifacial gains are real, but only under specific albedo and mounting conditions. Your sales material should say "up to X% depending on installation," not a flat number.
- Aging test results. PID, damp heat, thermal cycling—ask for batch-specific results, not a generic family certificate.
- Packaging standard. The pallets, the vertical vs horizontal orientation, the edge protection. In transit, how modules are packed causes more damage than how they were made.

When OEM or Private Label Doesn't Make Sense
Honest boundary conditions. If you're buying under 1 MW equivalent per year, the administrative cost of private label—packaging design, warranty setup, document management—will very likely exceed any margin benefit. You're better off selling LONGi branded modules and letting their brand carry the bankability risk.
And OEM isn't automatically premium. Custom frame colors, custom connectors, non-standard stowing: every deviation is a thing that can go wrong or get unregistered in the factory's documentation. A "custom" module with incomplete paperwork is a liability, not a differentiator. (We've seen custom-labeled modules lose warranty support because the customization wasn't properly registered in the factory system—that was back in 2023, and painful.)
Finally, the caveat that frames everything I've said: my experience comes from wholesale distribution channels, roughly 200 shipments a year in the 10 MW to 200 MW range. If you're a utility developer with independent engineers, or a small importer moving a few pallets by air freight, your risk profile is different. The TCO framework still applies—the numbers just look different.
So stop treating OEM vs private label as the big strategic decision. It's a merchandising decision. The actual purchasing decision is about specifications, verification, and what it costs you when something goes wrong. Get those right, and the label on the front—LONGi or yours—mostly just describes who owns the relationship.
