Common Mistakes That Still Cost Buyers Money
This is written for people who are actually responsible for buying LONGi solar panels — not for tourists. If you're a distributor, wholesaler, or manufacturer planning to put your own label on LONGi Hi-MO modules, this 7-step checklist is the process I use. I've run module purchasing for our solar distribution company for 6 years, managed an annual budget of roughly $8 million, and dealt with more suppliers than I can count. Steps 4 and 5 are the ones most buyers get wrong. Steps 1 through 3 are table stakes.
Quick note on bias: LONGi is a major solar panel manufacturer with serious scale, and they've earned their reputation. - Channel authorization documentation (a dealer/reseller agreement or written confirmation from a LONGi regional office)
- A serial number list that can be cross-checked with the factory
- Warehouse address verification — ideally, the modules ship from a LONGi-certified warehouse
If a supplier can't provide serial-level traceability, I walk. Every authorized LONGi distributor I've worked with has been able to provide this without hesitation.
Step 2: Read the Full Datasheet, Not Just the Wattage
The Hi-MO series is famous for efficiency numbers, and the headline specs are impressive. But if you're buying for an OEM program, the wattage is maybe 30% of what you need to evaluate. (Should mention: I learned this the hard way.)
The specs that actually matter for your customers:
- Bifaciality factor — for the dual-glass Hi-MO models, this tells you how much energy the rear side contributes. It varies more than most buyers expect.
- Degradation rate — first-year degradation and linear degradation over the warranty period. A 0.1% difference per year compounds into real yield loss over 25 years.
- Temperature coefficient of Pmax — for customers in hot climates, this determines hot-weather output.
- Mechanical load rating — snow and wind loads vary by region, and not all module variants handle the same loads.
For our first two orders, I relied on the sales rep's summary instead of reading the fine print. That wasn't a disaster, but we ended up with modules that had a different tolerance range than I had quoted to a customer. The rep wasn't trying to mislead me — they just didn't know every number in the full datasheet. Read it yourself.
Step 3: Ask for the Full Solar Panel Catalog — Not Just the Public One
Here's something that surprised me: LONGi's public product page shows a fraction of what they actually produce. (As of January 2025, at least — the OEM and channel-partner catalog includes SKUs that never make it to the marketing site.)
When you're building your own private label solar panel catalog, those additional SKUs matter. Different glass thicknesses, frame options, power tier ranges, and bifacial vs. monofacial configurations can be the difference between winning an RFP and having to say "not available."
What I ask for:
- All wattage tiers available for the module size I need
- Bifacial and monofacial variants
- Dual-glass vs. framed versions
- Lead times per variant — some SKUs are made to order, and the lead time variance is significant
- Minimum order quantities per variant, because some attractive SKUs have MOQs that don't work for our warehouse
One caveat: the full catalog is typically shared with channel partners, not with every random request. If your supplier is authorized, they should be able to get it.
Step 4: Map Out PV Module Compliance Requirements for Your Market
This is the step that burned me in March 2024, and I still cringe thinking about it.
We'd booked a container of LONGi modules for a California distributor. Pricing was locked, logistics were arranged. Then the distributor's engineering team asked for the UL listing certificate for the exact model number. I assumed "it's LONGi — of course they're UL certified." They are. But the specific SKU we ordered had UL 61730 certification, and their installer network required UL 1703 for the specific incentive program they wanted to use. Different listing, different rules. We lost six weeks to rework and paperwork — plus storage fees. (Thankfully, the customer didn't cancel.)

North America:
- UL 61730 listing for the exact model number you're ordering — not a similar model
- If you're targeting specific utility or incentive programs, verify their individual equipment requirements
- Import tariffs: Section 201, 232, and AD/CVD status. This changes periodically, so I have our customs broker run an update before every purchase.
Europe:
- IEC 61215 and IEC 61730 certification
- CE marking under the current EU framework
- WEEE/RoHS documentation if you're reselling into EU markets
Environmental claims:
If you're putting your private label on the module, your marketing claims become your responsibility. Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), environmental language like "recyclable" must be substantiated. The FTC Green Guides, for example, require that a "recyclable" claim only be made where at least 60% of consumers have access to recycling facilities for that product. This limits what you can put on your packaging. We designed our private label branding in 2022 and had to walk back some language after legal review. If I remember correctly, the "100% recyclable" line was the first to go — the modules are largely recyclable, but most end-of-life recyclers won't take them yet. I'd rather you learn from that than repeat it.
Step 5: Run a TCO Comparison — Unit Price Is Only the Beginning
If you're a procurement professional, you know this. But I keep seeing experienced buyers at solar distributors compare $/W and stop there. That's not a purchasing decision — that's a guess.
Here's a real example. In 2023, we compared LONGi Hi-MO 5 with a similar bifacial module from another established manufacturer. Their price was $0.006/W lower — on a 5MW order, that looked like $30,000 in savings. When I ran our TCO spreadsheet, the numbers flipped:
- Their lead time was 4 weeks longer: $4,000 in added financing costs, because we fund inventory on a line of credit.
- Their degradation rate was 0.55%/year — LONGi's was 0.45%/year. The yield difference over a 25-year performance warranty was worth about $13,000 at current PPA prices.
- Their warranty claims had to be returned to a regional depot — no field verification. Estimated extra logistics: $8,000 over the warranty period.
- Their packaging had a 1.2% damage rate in our trial shipments vs. 0.4% for LONGi. That's about $6,500 in replacement modules per order.
Total added costs: $31,500. The "saving" was gone. The cheaper panel would have cost us about $1,500 more.
Now, I'm not saying LONGi always wins the TCO — sometimes another manufacturer's product fits your market better. What I am saying: you don't know until you run the numbers. The lowest quote has cost us more in roughly 60% of the comparisons I've done. That's not a scientific study — it's just what our spreadsheet said after 6 years of tracking.
Step 6: Order Samples and Inspect Before You Commit to Container Quantities
For PV module OEM programs, your name goes on the product. If the module has a hidden defect, it's your warranty that gets called, not LONGi's.
I know sampling adds a couple of weeks to the procurement cycle, and it feels unnecessary with a Tier-1 manufacturer. But the conventional wisdom here is wrong in my experience — I've done incoming inspections on 40+ orders across three manufacturers, and the worst batch I ever saw came from a "premium" brand that everyone assumed had zero defects.
What we test on samples:
- EL (electroluminescence) testing — catches microcracks invisible to the eye. Worth the $150–$300 per sample set.
- Visual inspection against our label spec: color consistency, backsheet uniformity, frame alignment.

Step 7: Get Warranty Terms in Writing Before You Issue the PO
LONGi's product and performance warranties are competitive on paper. But the warranty that matters to your private label business is the one that supports your own warranty commitments. There's a difference.
Questions I require answers to before the first order:
- Is the warranty transferable/assignable to your OEM customers?
- Who processes claims: LONGi directly or your distributor?
- What's the claim process? Field inspection, depot return, or both?
- What's the expected claim resolution timeframe?
- Does the warranty cover junction boxes and connectors — and if so, what are the exclusions?
That last question came from a painful experience. We had a module failure where the junction box was the root cause. The warranty document said "module warranty covers components," but the claim handler pointed us to a separate section with junction box exclusions. It took four months to resolve. (We eventually got credit, but the customer relationship took a hit.)
Common Mistakes That Still Cost Buyers Money
If you only remember a few things from this article:
- Unit price is the start, not the decision. $/W comparison without TCO is a gamble. The spreadsheet takes two hours, and it has saved us six-figure mistakes.
- Compliance isn't checked — it's verified against your specific model. "Certified" isn't enough. The exact SKU must meet the exact listing your target market requires.
- Verbal agreements don't survive invoicing. Get warranty and after-sales terms in writing. I should add: this applies to every manufacturer, not just LONGi.
- Your private label makes you the manufacturer in the eyes of your customers. Test, inspect, and document everything.
This checklist comes from 6 years of procurement experience, including mistakes I'd rather not repeat. The good news: LONGi modules have been consistently high-quality, and the problems I've hit were mostly born from my own process falling short. That's the real lesson — the process is what protects you. The panel is only part of the equation.
