Small orders, same bar
Large purchase orders and small trial orders usually fail for the same reasons: the paperwork was weak, the label did not match the datasheet, or the serial numbers told a story nobody read. A LONGi 400 W monocrystalline solar panel can be a solid building block, but the brand name is not a shortcut around quality checks.
Use this checklist when you are evaluating a solar panel supplier or PV module distributor that offers LONGi-branded modules. It is written for distributors, wholesalers, and OEM/private-label buyers. Do steps 1–3 before signing a purchase order. Keep steps 4–6 for the receiving dock and contract review.
I work in quality and brand compliance at a PV module distributor. I review roughly 200 datasheets, factory certificates, and first deliveries every year. In Q1 2024 I rejected 6% of first deliveries for issues that did not show up on the commercial invoice: mismatched labels, missing batch documents, and one pallet that mixed modules with different electrical characteristics. The steps below are the same ones I use when I approve a supplier or a wholesale lot.
Step 1: Start with the exact product specification, not the phrase 'LONGi 400W'
Most inquiries start with 'I want a LONGi 400 W monocrystalline solar panel for my next distribution order.' That is a starting point, not a product specification. LONGi modules in the 400 W class can have different cell layouts, dimensions, frame colors, glass thickness, and bifacial options. If you only compare '400 W mono' on a spreadsheet, you can end up with a module that is electrically fine but mechanically wrong for your market.
Before you ask for the price list, confirm these in writing:
- full model number as it appears on the official datasheet and module label
- module dimensions, including frame depth
- weight and mechanical load rating
- front and backsheet material: transparent backsheet, white backsheet, or dual glass
- cable length and connector type
I only believed the 'same 400W' warning after accepting a batch that did not fit the racking profile we had planned. The modules were real, the output was fine, and the physical fit was wrong. The return negotiation lasted longer than the original sales conversation. Now every approved product has a product code that includes dimensions, not just an output class.
Step 2: Read the module label like a contract
Anyone can print an attractive front logo. The backside label is the first place I check. On a genuine LONGi product, the label should show the manufacturer, model, electrical ratings, country of origin, certification marks, and serial number. When we receive LONGi solar panels, that label has to match the carton label and the packing list before I allow a pallet to be broken down.
Ask for the factory quality certificate and serial range for the batch, not just a sales PDF. I have seen real modules with missing batch documentation; the modules worked, but identifying them for a warranty claim later was painful. If the seller says the label data does not matter because 'they are all the same,' treat that as a yellow flag.
Step 3: Match electrical values in three places
The module label is one version of truth. The official technical datasheet is another. The supplier's quote is not a source.
For a LONGi 400 W monocrystalline solar panel, compare the electrical values on the label with the current technical datasheet published on an official LONGi page or a trusted distribution portal:
- maximum power (Pmax) and power tolerance
- voltage at max power (Vmp) and open-circuit voltage (Voc)
- current at max power (Imp) and short-circuit current (Isc)
- module efficiency and maximum system voltage
Any difference should have an explanation you can verify. An OEM or private-label module may carry a different commercial code, but the electrical behavior should still trace to an approved factory spec. Do not accept 'it is the same as regular LONGi, trust me' as engineering evidence.
Most buyers ask, 'is this a real LONGi panel?' The better question is, 'can you tie the electrical values on my quote to that factory's batch test records?' The first question can be answered with a logo. The second one requires actual traceability.
Step 4: Open a sample before you accept the lot
If modules are already at your warehouse, do not let the freight driver close the appointment before you look. Open at least one module from every pallet cluster and photograph packaging, serial labels, and visible surfaces. For a 2,000-module order, a 0.5% sample is common. For smaller orders, open at least one module of each model and date code.
Check for:
- edge and corner frame damage, especially lifted aluminum or bent corners
- scratches on front glass or backsheet
- junction box attached firmly, without cracks
- cables and connectors free from cuts or foreign material
- module label still attached and readable
- packaging edge protection intact
You cannot inspect microcracks by eye. Do not walk on modules, and train warehouse staff to lift them properly. A visually good module can still have hidden handling damage, which is why the documentation audit in the next step matters.
Step 5: Audit batch traceability, not just the sample
Traceability matters more than brand stickers. Ask for serial number ranges or batch date codes for every order line, then check the physical modules against them. If serial numbers jump between date codes or fall outside the stated range, stop before unpacking all pallets.
I learned never to assume a supplier's serial range is correct after once auditing 4,000 modules that came from three different factory date codes while the packing list said one. Every module individually looked fine; as an inventory lot, they were a compliance headache because their factory test records referred to different BOM versions. A month of reconciliation later, batch traceability became a standard review step.
The question people ask suppliers is, 'are these genuine LONGi panels?' The better question is, 'can I tie the serial ranges on my purchase order to factory test records?'
Step 6: Put OEM, private label, and the warranty owner on paper
This is the step where B2B buyers get lost. The phrase 'PV module OEM vs private label' is treated like a quality test. It is not.
OEM normally means the factory produces a module according to a buyer's specification. Private label means the same type of manufacturing relationship plus the buyer's own brand on the product. Both models can be legitimate, and neither removes the need for clear traceability. The important question is not only 'is it branded LONGi?' It is: who is responsible for warranty, replacement, and disposal of failed modules?
A LONGi-branded distribution order gives you one clear warranty reference: LONGi, through an authorized distributor or directly. A private-label order can be a valid commercial product if the label is approved and the warranty chain is written down. If the label says your brand but no one can explain the warranty chain, do not call it 'LONGi equivalent.' That phrase creates a lot of avoided warranty claims.
What still goes wrong
- Buyers treat '400 W' as a model number. It is an electrical class; the actual model must be verified.
- Buyers inspect the front logo before the back label. Read the label first and compare it with the carton.
- Buyers check one sample from one pallet. Check a sample from each serial block or date code.
- Buyers discuss warranty after the invoice. Warranty and product specification belong in the purchase agreement.
Small orders, same bar
A small first order is not a reason to lower the bar. On a 10-module sample and a 10,000-module project, the question of whether the panel fits your market is the same. If a supplier does not want to provide model numbers, serial ranges, or datasheet URLs because your order is small, write that down and compare it with how they answer a larger order.
No checklist can guarantee yield in every installation. Sun exposure, mounting design, inverter matching, and maintenance all matter. This checklist is designed to stop avoidable specification and documentation mistakes before they land in your warehouse. Once that part is solid, the rest of the solar project has a fair foundation.
